Rainer received his Diploma (~M.S.), summa cum laude, in Computer Science from KIT and his Dr.-Ing. (~Eng. PhD), summa cum laude, in intuitive robot programming also from KIT. For his fundamental contributions to robotics he was awarded the prestigious Georges Giralt PhD award for the ex aequo best PhD thesis in all of robotics in Europe 2013 and as Technology Review Top5 Innovator under 35 in Germany in 2013.
His endeavour into intuitive robot programming started with hobby projects on the educational humanoid robot Bioloid in 2006, followed by a job as undergraduate research assistant in 2007. Since then he has been pushing the technological boundaries of robotic manipulation to generate and execute respective task models.
